MENTORSHIP BEYOND
THE DOJO
At The Big Five Martial Arts Club, martial arts training goes far beyond learning techniques. Our mission is to help students develop confidence, discipline, and strong character that positively impacts their lives both inside and outside the dojo. This is why we offer a mentorship approach that extends beyond regular training sessions.
Through mentorship conversations with parents and students, we ensure that every child’s training journey supports their personal development, confidence, and long-term growth.
A Personalized Development Journey
Every child’s journey is different. Some students may join martial arts to build confidence, while others may want to improve focus, discipline, or resilience. After a student attends their Free Trial Class, we take time to understand their individual goals and challenges. This mentorship process helps us create a training approach that supports the child’s personal development journey from White Belt to Black Belt Confidence. Parents become partners in this journey, allowing us to work together to support each student’s growth.
Supporting Children Through Real-Life Challenges
Children sometimes face challenges outside the dojo, such as bullying, low confidence, or difficulty managing emotions. Through our mentorship approach, instructors can help guide students in developing the mindset needed to overcome these situations.
For example, if a child is experiencing bullying at school, mentorship may focus on:
- Building confidence and self-belief
- Developing strong posture and body language
- Learning how to communicate boundaries clearly
- Understanding responsible self-defense if necessary
This guidance helps children develop the tools needed to handle difficult situations with confidence and control.
The Big Five Philosophy
Everything we teach is built around five core principles that shape our students’ character and mindset.

CHARACTER
Develop integrity, respect, and strong values.

LOYALTY
Build commitment to teammates, family, and goals.

EFFORT
Success comes through hard work and perseverance.

CONTROL
Learn emotional control, discipline, and focus — essential skills.

ETIQUETTE
Respect for others is fundamental to martial arts.
Building Confidence
Confidence grows when children feel supported and guided. Through mentorship and structured training, students learn how to:
• Set meaningful goals
• Develop strong habits and discipline
• Stay motivated when facing challenges
• Take responsibility for their progress
These lessons help students build confidence that extends far beyond martial arts training.
Strengthening the Parent–Instructor Partnership
Parents play an important role in their child’s development. Our mentorship system encourages open communication between instructors and parents so that we can support each child’s progress together. Through regular conversations and progress discussions, parents gain insight into how martial arts training is helping their child develop confidence and self-belief, discipline and focus, emotional resilience, and leadership skills. This partnership helps ensure that the lessons learned in the dojo also support growth at home and at school.
A Journey That Extends Beyond Martial Arts
At The Big Five Martial Arts Club, we believe martial arts should help students grow into confident, disciplined, and responsible individuals.
Our mentorship approach ensures that training is not just about martial arts skills, it is about helping students develop the mindset and confidence needed to succeed in life.
